Bedford
With a population of approximately 82,000, Bedford is the county town of Bedfordshire in the East of England. It is 56 miles from London and 22 and 31 miles from Northampton and Cambridge respectively. Bedford is part of a larger urban area that includes, Kempston, Elstow and Biddenham. Beford has ten wards including Brickhill, Castle and Cauldwell. It covers postcode areas MK40-42. There has been a settlement in the area since pre-medieval times. King Offa of Mercia, he of Dyke fame, was buried in the area in 796. Bedford developed principally as an agricultural town with a focus on wool, although in the seventeenth century it became an important centre for lace making and remained so right up until the early twentieth century. Enginering developed in the town in the nineteenth century and today, like many towns, Bedford has a mixed economy. One important development was the opening of Bedford Brick Company in the 1950s. The company recruited some of its workforce from Southern Italy and today the town a large Italian population. There is also a big Asian population in the town, particuarly people from the Punjab.

Not surprisingly the town has its own Little Italy offering a range of Italian themed restaurants, bars and delicatessents. The Higgins’ Gallery houses the areas local historical collection together with watercolours and drawings. Bedford Park dates back to the Victorian era and has a bandstand and pavillion which are typical of that time. Bedford Corn Exchange, along with the University of Bedfordhire Theatre are the cultural venues for the town with both hosting a wide range of amateur and professional entertainment throughout the year.

The river Ouse flows through the centre of the town and in July each year Bedford holds the Festival on the River which brings a quarter of a million people into the town and is, with the exception of the Notting Hill Festival, the largest open air event in the country. In May the annual Beford Regatta is held; the biggest river rowing event in England.

Bedford is well served by two railway stations and a network of bus services. Hotels include a number of Premier Inns, Travellodges, a Holiday Inn, a Raddison and a number of independent hotels.
